Krystal: The campus is small. There are many police officers and security personnel who are on bikes and who walk throughout campus. There are transportation carts driven by security personnel that travel along the main street of the campus. These carts offer free transportation to the various buildings on campus. There are designated pick-up and drop-off areas. Also, many students use their bikes to travel back and forth. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Krystal: All the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants have office hours. But what I like most is the one-on-one attention and outside-of-office-hours attention that the professors and advisers are willing to give. The professors, advisers, and staff at Texas Southern University are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that every student excels. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Krystal: I lived on campus for a few years. I enjoyed the dorm life. The entire university is very diverse. I studied Pharmacy, Chemistry, and Environmental Toxicology. The Chemistry program was a passion of mine. It was my first major, and after changing my major several times, I went back to chemistry. The professors and staff in the Chemistry department are awesome. They helped me get internships and provided a strict study track to help me excel as a scientist. Texas Southern University did an excellent job in preparing me for my career. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Krystal: At first, it was very difficult to meet people. I only met those who moved in to the dorm at the same time that I did. Dorm life helped me open up. I learned about the different organizations on campus and the different cultures that were all around me. I joined a sorority. It played a significant role in my social life. I was also active in many other organizations on campus. My sorority sisters and I spent a lot of time together. We still spend time together. One was actually my roommate for a couple of years. We still celebrate many of lifes moments with one another, and I am still active in my organization. Greek life also has a downside. The students must know that they are on campus for an education. My organization required a particular GPA in order to join, and an even higher GPA must be maintained. Therefore, we had to study and serve the community before anything else. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Krystal: The Career Center and Student Support Services are very helpful. They help with financial aid, dorm life, the life-away-from-home adjustment, tutoring services, career services, and anything that will help students while in school and once graduated. There are services to help students create resumes and classes to teach them how to get a desired job. Many reputable companies recruit on campus, including hospitals, oil and gas companies, engineering companies, education institutions, pharmaceutical companies, the American military. Various other companies recruit on the campus of Texas Southern University. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Krystal: There are study areas in every building, including the dorms. They are not over-crowded. They are very spacious with easy access. I used the library a lot, and there are rooms of various sizes. In the student center, there are also study rooms. Every building on campus has available study rooms. These rooms have whiteboards and other resources to help students excel in their studies. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Krystal: Houston is a beautiful city. There are many things to do. The campus is located very close to downtown, the museum district, and the medical center. There are many attractions surrounding the campus. The downtown area is a wonderful place to unwind and relax. The campus is about 10 minutes from downtown, and students can use the side streets to safely travel to the downtown area. There are coffee shops, reading rooms, and other small, cozy places to study in the area. The University of Houston is within walking distance, so many students study together. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Krystal: The campus is small, and there are small class sizes. I like the small classes. It allows the professor to have more time with each student. The university has a total undergraduate enrollment of about 7,000. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Krystal: I have had the opportunity to have many wonderful experiences with my professors. My most memorable experience was with my research professor. Go!Until Your Next Lesson...It might be a bit asinine to repeat what your parents and teachers have long been telling you: revise between lessons.That being the most effective way to retain vocab and grammatical constructions, we echo their edict.The Best Way s To MemoriseLabel everything around you When you start learning the  Italian language, the first vocabulary words you learn are focused on representing yourself and your surroundings. Make signs to mark the various appliances and pieces of furniture in your home. As you go about your day, these signs will remind you that you keep juice in “il firgorifero” and go to dream in “il letto“.You can apply this strategy to pictures as well. For example, you can print a picture of a person and label the various parts of their body in Italian, such as gamba (leg), testa (head), dito (finger) and orecchio (ear). This tactic works great because you learn to connect words with mental images.Learn words in the proper context Instead of only learning that correre means “to run,” you might find you retain the word better by learning it as part of a sentence. Create a plain sentence such as “I like to run.” or “Mi piace correre.”By learning the word in setting, you will remember the word and its meaning easier. As an added benefit, it allows you to exercise and learn other Italian vocabulary words at the same time.Practice with as many flashcards as possible Flashcards have long been a popular memorization technique because they’re a highly efficient way to learn new words. Below are our three favorite flashcard applications.Create mnemonic devices of your own Mnemonic devices are another excellent way to memorize Italian thesaurus lists. Basically, you’re creating a familiar maxim or a short song to help you memorize something that would unless be difficult to remember. In other words, it’s all about association.For example, the Italian term for “to believe” is “credere“. The beginning of this word looks and sounds similar to the English word “creed”. Because a creed is set of beliefs, making this combination can boost your ability to remember “credere“.Write a short story in Italian When learning a list of Italian vocabulary expressions, create a narrative that links the words. It doesn’t matter how absurd your story is, as long as it creates a vivid image in your brain. If you don’t know a word in Italian, simply use the English word in its place for now.As your vocabulary increases, you can start translating the remaining words into Italian and making your story more complicated. For example, if you were studying animal names in Italian, your story might start with: “Il cane (the dog) chased un gatto (a cat) that was running after un topo (a mouse).”No matter which tactics you want to use, practising your vocabulary everyday is important for long term memory. Applying to College is a Process ACT SAT Prep and College Admissions Blog You may have heard it said before that applying to college is a “process,” and it really is. Additionally, every student’s process is different. However, there are some typical stages a student may go through to find their ideal college, and in this blog we outline them for you. Getting Underway We recommend that students seriously begin the college process during their junior year. If students or families are college-focused, there are things freshman and sophomores can do, but they mostly revolve around earning strong grades and getting involved in activities. Toward the middle of junior year, students can kick- off the college process by determining what qualities they want in an ideal college. Students should consider size, location, major, and other factors to create an initial list of schools. Exploration During the next stage of the process, students will research potential colleges online, in books, through campus visits and other ways. By learning more about colleges, students can determine which schools they really like and which ones they don’t. They can also determine which criteria are more important than others (ie, “It’s really important to me that the school has an equestrian program, so I’ll look at schools smaller than I initially wanted.”) During this stage, it’s important that students verbalize their goals and be realistic about their expectations. It’s also helpful when families plan college visits and attend college-sponsored information sessions. Applications When it comes time to apply to colleges, the stress level can be at an all-time high. Deadlines, essays, resumes, interviews... the list goes on and it can be a lot for a student to manage alone. Parents, school counselors, admission counselors and college counselors are all helpful resources to help students during this time. Financing College At some point, hopefully earlier rather than later, families need to have a conversation about the cost of college and how to pay for it. Honesty is the best policy; parents should let students know what their realistic options are. Students may need to add less expensive colleges to the list, apply to schools where they are likely to receive a grant, and/or apply for scholarships. Decisions, Decisions The final stage of the process is usually the favorite one, but it doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Once a student has (hopefully) a few acceptances to various colleges, the family needs to sit down and weigh the pros and cons of each school. Sometimes it’s an easy decision, but occasionally it’s really difficult. Families need to have these discussions and come up with a decision that everyone is happy with.
